BELL’S BOOKS NAMED SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR ON THE EVE OF THEIR 70TH ANNIVERSARY
SACRAMENTO – State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) today announced his selection of Bell’s Books, a family-owned bookstore in Palo Alto, as Senate District 11’s Small Business of the Year. The announcement comes on the eve of Bell’s 70th anniversary.
Bell’s Books was established in downtown Palo Alto in 1935. The bookstore stocks over 150,000 used, out-of-print, and rare volumes. They offer more than 500 subject categories including history, horticulture, literature and the arts.
“Bell’s Books is a Palo Alto institution,” said Simitian. “I hope this delightful, family-owned bookstore continues to be a part of our community for many more years.”
“This is an honor that I share with my parents who founded this store and our hard working staff,” said Faith Bell, owner of Bell’s Books. “

HAPPY BIRTHDAY . . . Bell's Books on Emerson Street in downtown Palo Alto will celebrate its 70th birthday Friday night in style. The store, which sells used books, will have a Dixieland jazz band and city officials on hand from 6 to 9 p.m. The store will also receive an award from state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, as the small business of the year in his district. Faith Bell, who has worked at the store 22 years, said she is the "baby of the bunch" at the family-owned business, started by her father, Herbert Bell , in 1935. He was helped his wife, Valeria Bell and later by Faith's brothers and sisters. One staff member, Barbara Worl, has worked at the store more than 60 years.
