    I had never been one for cantatas. But now I'm hooked.

    Sunday I was treated to a performance of The Victor at First United Methodist Church on Spring Hill Drive. It was simply stunning.

    The story is told in narrative and song. It begins with Jesus bringing Lazarus back from the dead and healing the sick, then moves to the condemnation of Jesus by Pontius Pilate, Jesus' arrival at Calvary, his crucifixion and his resurrection.

    The story is narrated by Benjamin _ a fictitious character _ who is a Jewish religious leader. He wonders if Jesus can possibly be the promised Messiah. And so the tale unfolds with narration and song.

    The actors' costumes had the look of authenticity _ clothes, head dressings and foot coverings. And it was clear from the reaction of the audience that I was not alone in my admiration.

    Cast members, despite their expertise, are not professional. They are just your ordinary Spring Hill transplants, mostly Northern. Church members handle everything: the production sets, choral direction, orchestration, technical and costume coordinating, costume making, lighting and special effects.

    This is the third year The Victor has been presented.
